Native and Water-Wise Plants
We are in the midst of a revolution! Through necessity we have all started to embrace the wonderful benefits of using drought-tolerant plants in our landscapes. Less water, less maintenance, just as beautiful!! Instead of focusing entirely on California natives, we have brought together an awe-inspiring blend of water-wise plants from around the world. Plants from California, Australia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean are all found at Deep Roots Garden Center. You’ll be amazed at the difference these plants can make in your garden! Being perfectly suited to our climate, they will thrive with less water and less work and will make you happy. Why struggle with plants that just don’t like it here? Native and Water-Wise are the logical choice and we have the varieties to make any garden look great year-round!
What Are Native Plants?
A plant found growing and reproducing naturally in a region over a very long period of time (and prior to any human interference) is native to that particular area. Native plants are adapted to difficult growing conditions, and when well-matched to their growing environment, their use will create a more sustainable landscape that requires less maintenance. These once-forgotten beauties are beginning to find their rightful home in our gardens and landscapes.
What are Water-Wise Plants?
Water Wise refers to designing and implementing a landscape that conserves water. The term 'xeriscape' means the same thing. Neither term means gardening specifically with native plants, but may also include non-native plants that are adapted to dry conditions. Here in Southern California we have a wide variety of beautiful native species that can be planted side by side with plants and flowers from similar climatic regions such as the Mediterranean, South Africa and Australia.
We carry a wide assortment of seasonal vegetable plants with the focus on unique varieties old and new. Come check out the amazing varieties of tomatoes, squash, eggplants, lettuces, peppers, peas, beans, melons, and so much more that we have at Deep Roots! Plants are restocked often to make sure you will always have a bounty of fresh produce growing in your garden. We have every accessory you will need to get the most out of your veggie plants, from tomato cages, trellises, stakes, to a full line of organic soils, fertilizers, and insecticides to keep your food natural and healthy.
Rosemary, sage, thyme, basil, oregano, mint, they’re all here and then some. We have a huge selection of fresh herb plants to spice up any dish year-round. New varieties turn up often with improved hardiness and flavor, making herbs an easy addition to your yard. Whether growing herbs in pots or beds, you’ll never have a bland meal again!
Citrus, Fruit Trees, and Berries
Is there anything quite as satisfying as picking a piece of fresh, ripe fruit right from the tree or vine? Don’t think so. We offer every variety of stone fruits, citrus, and berry vines that grow in Southern California. Oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines, grapefruits, apples, peaches, pears, nectarines, apricots, grapes, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and more! We carry nothing but the most well-grown specimens to ensure success, and we only stock varieties GUARANTEED to produce fruit in our mild winter climate.
A house isn’t a home until there are some living plants inside. Nothing makes a room feel more welcoming and comfortable than integrating a little Mother Nature. Whether it’s large, dramatic foliage plants like palms and ficus, or flowering centerpieces like orchids and hydrangea, we have it. This is South Bay’s premier destination for the highest quality and best selection of interior plants. Our large main building is packed with amazing foliage and flowering plants of all types and sizes, and we strive to always find new and exciting varieties for the public. Plants that are toxic to cats and dogs
We are often asked which plants are poisonous for pets and children. There are very few, if any, plants that are poisonous to cats and dogs, that is to say they will die if they eat it. However, after conducting considerable research it seems that there is a very long list of plants that could be toxic to pets and children if ingested, that is to say they will get sick if they eat them. Most animals stay away from these plants and do not eat them. It seems to us that the best thing would be to train your pets and kids not to eat plants!
